St. Patrick’s Day is just a couple weeks away and St. Louisans have a couple options to celebrate.

The city actually holds two St. Patrick’s Day parades. There is the downtown parade that is held each year on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. This year, it will start at noon on Saturday, March 15, at Market and 18th Street. The event is geared toward families with the typical array of floats, bands and clowns.

At the parade’s conclusion, there are more festivities at the Irish Village in Kiener Plaza where you can enjoy food, drinks and live Irish music.

But as any true St. Louis native knows, the place to be on the actual day of St. Patrick’s Day is the historic Dogtown neighborhood. There the Ancient Order of Hibernians have sponsored a St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1984. This year, the parade will start at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17, at Tamm and Oakland Avenue and will end at Tamm and Manchester.

This isn’t your typical parade because it tries to keep a truly traditional Irish feel. Instead of giant floats and balloons you’ll see plenty of bagpipes members of the Irish-American community out in force. The neighborhood is packed as the parade rolls down Tamm and Oakland Avenue, south past Seamus McDaniels (a favorite Irish pub in the area) and St. James the Greater Catholic Church before ending at Tamm and Manchester.

The intersection at Tamm and Clayton is always one of the most popular spots to catch the parade, but it’s sure to be packed. Parking can also be hard to come by, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to scope out an ideal spot.

There are plenty of entertainment options after the parade, too. You can hit up one of the many popular pubs in the neighborhood like Seamus McDaniels (1208 Tamm Ave.), Felix’s Pizza Pub (6335 Clayton Ave.) or Pat’s Bar and Grill (6400 Oakland Ave.) or take advantage of one of the beer booths along the parade route.
