St. Louis Holiday Decoration Safety Tips for Homeowners

The holidays are a wonderful time of year for family and friends to get together and celebrate in St. Louis. Many homeowners choose to decorate their homes for the holidays.  With the normal decorations come some safety hazards that can cause damage to a home. Keeping the home and family safe during the holiday season is important, so here are some tips for decorating safely during the holiday season.

If decorations include a Christmas tree, it is important to make sure that the house is not exposed to increased fire hazards throughout the season. As real trees dry out later in the season, they can become very flammable. For this reason it is important to not have them near any exposed flames. Homeowners should also avoid having a tree in front of a heat source, like a fireplace or space heater. Though Christmas trees look very nice next to fireplaces, this can be a dangerous place to put them. A dry Christmas tree can easily catch fire from a stray ember that floats out from the fireplace with a draft.

In order to decrease the chances that a real tree will become a fire hazard, prevent it from becoming dehydrated. A dried out tree is much more likely to pose a danger than one that has been properly watered. There are inexpensive solutions at home and garden stores, which can help Christmas trees stay green and healthy for an extended period of time. Purchasing such a solution is well worth it in order to protect a home from potential fire hazards. However, St. Louis homeowners with pets and children should pay attention to the contents of the solutions to ensure no toxic chemical are used.

For those who choose to put up decorations outside of the home, there are certain measures that can reduce the chance of damage to the house. Limiting the number of strings of lights that are running to one electrical outlet can help prevent power overloads. Free-standing decorations should be securely tied or staked down so that they will not blow away during a winter storm. Flying decorations are capable of causing sizeable damage to vehicles or homes if they are not secured. By following these simple tips any home can enjoy the decorations that are installed for the holiday season. A safe season is the best kind of season, especially when shared with loved ones in the beautiful St. Louis area.
